On a wet track, the race management made the decision to start the sprint round of the GP3 Series under safety car regime. In pole position under the reverse grid rule, Jake Hugues (DAMS) then leads the peloton ahead of the Japanese ART Grand Prix Nirei Fukuzumi.
The Nippon, however, was quickly eliminated following mechanical problems. The safety car was finally recalled at the end of the 9th lap, thus freeing the drivers. Still leader, Jake Hugues leads in front of Matt Parry (Koiranen GP) but will lose control of the race afterwards and a contact and a passage off-trajectory, allowing in the process to Ralph Boschung (Koiranen GP) to take the lead in the race.
The race will be neutralized twice, notably after contact between Charles Leclerc (ART Grand Prix), winner yesterday, Tatiana Calderon (Arden), and will end under Safety-Car regime. Boschung finally wins in front Alex Albon (ART Grand Prix) and Antonio Fuoco (Trident). The top 5 is completed by Nyck de Vries (ART Grand Prix) and Jack Aitken (Arden).
