The WRC will return to Estonia at the beginning of September

World Rally Championship competitors (WRC) have been pawing with impatience since the last round played in mid-March in Mexico. They will still have to wait until September 4 to return to the fight against the clock.

WRC promoters unveiled a revamped calendar this Thursday July 2. The reigning world champion crew, Ott Tänak et Martin Järveoja (Hyundai) ont certainement dû sourire en voyant l’apparition de l’Estonie à la rentrée.

Ce rally on land, seems like Finland with its fast tracks in the forest, will open the final sprint of the 2020 season, with a modified format of two stages instead of the usual three. Conversely, average speeds will drop during the next trip on the rocky tracks of Turkey at the end of September.

Initially scheduled for August, the Rally Germany is postponed to mid-October, while the Rally Sardinia will exchange its summer temperatures for an autumn climate in October. The Rally Argentina is canceled.

Finally, the world badge of the discipline is preserved with the maintenance of the brand new Rally of Japan as a provisional final. Unlike the 2000s, the Japanese event will be contested on asphalt. All rounds will count for the WRC 2 and WRC 3 rankings, while the Junior WRC program will be revealed later.

In addition, negotiations continue between those responsible for the championship and the Ypres and Croatia rallies, with a view to entering the 2020 calendar.

“This announcement signals the return of the WRC in 2020, rejoices Oliver Celsa, Managing Director of WRC Promotor. Fans express enormous passion for the WRC in Estonia and Italy. The wait will only increase until the resumption in September. »

For Yves Matton, the head of Rallies at the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), this calendar rewards "months of discussions which required a good dose of flexibility from all stakeholders.

“I am confident about the organization of these eight events in the season, and this will be possible thanks to the commitment and work of the organizers of each event.

We are obviously disappointed not to have been able to find a viable logistical solution for the Rally Argentina, especially knowing the work undertaken by the Automóvil Club Argentino and each member of the organization. »
