Mikko Hirvonen predicts tough rally

Everyone has their turn to be in the delicate position of opening the track in WRC. During the next rally of Mexico (March 3-6), it will be Mikko Hirvonen's turn to lose seconds by handfuls on the dusty roads of the Léon region. The other drivers, including those of the Citröen Racing team (Loeb et Ogier), will be able to benefit from a cleaned trajectory.

“Leading in the championship can have disadvantages and one of them is starting first on dirt roads, admits the Finnish pilot. My rivals have better positions for the first day, but I will do my best to find the path to victory. This is the third time in a row that I have found myself in this position as fly-half in Mexico, I am starting to get used to it and I do not underestimate the difficulties that await me.”

And Hirvonen continues: “A win in the new car's debut in Sweden was a perfect start for me and the team, but it means nothing if we can't build on it in Mexico. It is not an easy rally because of the altitude which affects the performance of the cars. We've never had much luck here, but I believe the new car will give us a greater chance of victory. The Fiesta WRC now uses a 6-speed gearbox, and this should help us make better use of the available power.”

See you on Friday for a first assessment of the forces present.
