While the Long Beach Grand Prix has been extended by the city until 2028, it will see a new support race in 2022 with the Historic IMSA GTP Challenge. This event will feature sports car prototypes from the 1980s and 1990s. Lasting 20 minutes, the races will take place on Saturday, April 9, the day of the third round of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and Sunday, April 10, race day in IndyCar.
This event will be hosted by the Historic Motor Sports Association (HMSA). “What a great way for Long Beach fans to remember the heyday of IMSA sports car racing, said Cris Vandagriff, president of the HMSA. These cars were part of so many cult moments in the 1980s and 1990s. It will be so exciting to see them on the Long Beach track for the first time. It will be a spectacle and all the cars will be authentic in every detail, including the livery they used at the time. »
