Martin Whitmarsh acknowledged in Racing Engineering that McLaren considered a return to 24 Hours of Le Mans by 2016 in the GT category if the convergence between the GTE and the GT3 offered convincing results. The Woking manufacturer had started developing an MP4-12C in GTE configuration before the ACO published the new regulations.
