After a first Free Practice session dominated by the Acuras and in particular the No. 10 from Wayne Taylor Racing, the second running session at Mid-Ohio was won by the No. 01 Cadillac DPi. Sebastian Bourdais set the best time in the very last moments in 1:10.507. The Frenchman beat Olivier Jarvis in the #60 Meyer Shank Racing car by 0.117 seconds and Filipe Albuquerque for the WTR by 0.432 seconds. The Portuguese set the best time in EL1.

Anders Fjordbach set the best lap in LM P2 with the #20 High Class Racing car in 1:13.015 ahead of Will Stevens (Tower Motorport) and Ryan Dalziel (Era Motorsport). In the LM P3, it's a new Colin Braun moved to the top of the timesheet with the Ligier JS P320 from CORE Autorsport in 1:16.630.
Madison Snow got the better of the other GTDs with the No. 4 Paul Miller Racing BMW M3 GT1 in 1:20.261. Bill Auberlen took second in another car from the German manufacturer, the No. 96 Turner Motorsport. The two VasserSullivan Lexuses follow in third and fourth place.
