The first part of qualifying for the British Grand Prix saw Fernando Alonso (McLaren) take advantage of a switch to super-soft tires to set the best time in this Q1 in 1'37″598. The Spaniard is ahead Max Verstappen (Red Bull), Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), Nico Hulkenberg (Renault) and Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes)
The rain disrupted the session, a time dominated by Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull), the best during the first laps on intermediate tires. But the Australian driver was forced to stop at the side of the track, apparently following a mechanical problem.
The drivers eliminated in this first part are Lance stroll (Williams), Kevin Magnussen (Haas), the Saubers of Wehrlein and Ericsson and the Red Bull RB13 of Daniel Ricciardo.
