Most canceled, Pau will kick off the 2022 season

The 2022 World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) calendar has been amended following the FIA World Motor Sport Council this Saturday March 19. It is now no longer Most (Czech Republic) which will kick off, but Pau (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) following the cancellation of the Czech round initially scheduled for April 9 to 10 due to the state of emergency established in this country in connection with the war in Ukraine.

Therefore, the Pau Grand Prix (May 7-8), which will make its return on the world tourism scene after 12 years of absence, will allow the French public to discover French references like Yann Ehrlacher or Yvan Muller (Lynk & Co) in their very first race of the year 2022.

The WTCR promoter, Discovery Events, however reserves the right to add one or more replacement races at Most as well as at Sochi (cancelled due to war in Ukraine) during the campaign.

“The decision to cancel the trip to Most at such short notice is obviously regrettable and we are fully aware of the disruption and inconvenience this will cause, not only for the teams and other stakeholders, but also for the fans. But we have to accept that there are more important things in the world than sport right now, said Jean-Baptiste Ley, WTCR Director for Discovery Sports Events.

It was crucial to make the decision on the Czech Republic race as quickly as possible to avoid a last minute cancellation if the state of emergency were to be extended. We are finalizing an initiative to support broader fundraising efforts to help displaced people and will announce more details soon. For now, our thoughts are with all those suffering and we hope for a quick and peaceful resolution. »
