Kasey Kahne (Chevrolet – Hendrick Motorsports) set the best time in the first practice session on the Michigan oval in 35″410. He is ahead of his teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr, second at 68 thousandths, and the Chevy SS of Kurt Busch (Stewart-Haas Racing). For his return to the Sprint Cup Series, Juan-Pablo Montoya, entered in the No. 12 Ford Fusion of Team Penske, took 37th place, more than 1″2 behind Kahne.
