On the sidelines of the first free practices in NASCAR Sprint Cup in Atlanta, Georgia, American series president Mike Helton explained that Tony Stewart would indeed be eligible for the Chase if he wins one of the last two races of the regular season, or if he advances according to his ranking to the points. NASCAR rules state that a driver must attempt to qualify in every race to qualify, but Helton cited an exceptional case to justify the decision.
