After winning his first victory of the season at the Nürburgring, Robin Frijns set the best time in the first free practice session at the Hungaroring. The Josef Kaufmann Racing driver completed the lap of the Hungarian circuit in 1:44, narrowly ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne (KTR) and Daniil Kvyat (Koiranen Motorsport).
The first group was slower. Carlos Sainz Jr (Koiranen Motorsport) set the best time in 1:45:752.
