The 2020 Monte-Carlo rally is off to a perfect start for Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia (Toyota). The French achieved the best time after the first special stage, and have a lead of 1″8 over the outgoing champions, Ott Tänak and Martin Jarveoja (Hyundai).

Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul (Hyundai) conceded 6″4 but kept in contact while Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena (Hyundai) were beaten by rookie Kalle Rovanperä by a few tenths.

The M-Sport team's three Ford Fiestas have already suffered a serious setback. Esapekka Lappi, Teemu Suninen and Gus Greensmith suffered from a rise in engine temperature due to leaves blocking the air intake. Forced to slow down, the trio lost several tens of seconds.
