Max Verstappen (Red Bull) won his first F1 pole by winning qualifying for the Hungarian GP at the Hungaroring. The Dutchman set the lap record in 1'14''572 and was 18 thousandths ahead of Valtteri Bottas' Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) was further back, 2 tenths behind. The championship leader beat the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel.

Pierre Gasly (Red Bull) is only 6th, almost 9 tenths behind his teammate. The Frenchman precedes the McLarens of Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz Jr. Romain Grosjean (Haas) and Kimi Räikkönen (Alfa Romeo) completed the Top 10.

Bottas (Mercedes) failed at 18 thousandths. Hamilton (Mercedes) failed by almost 2 tenths in front of the Ferraris of Leclerc and Vettel. The 2007 champion is ahead of Hülkenberg (Renault), first eliminated, and the Toro Rossos of Albon and Kvyat. Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo) and Magnussen (Haas) complete the ranking of those eliminated from Q2.
