FIA puts brakes on radio conversations

Teams will have to find new methods to establish team strategies, with the FIA having just implemented a new rule prohibiting pits from communicating with their drivers about the performance of the car and driver. It was Charlie Whiting, the racing director at the Federation, who sent a document to the teams to warn them of the coming into force of this new ban.

This new point in the regulations has been put in place so that the other rules are respected. But if the teams are likely to review their procedures, the exact terms of this new point remain vague. “In order to ensure that Article 20.1 of the sporting regulations of the F1 (which indicates that a driver must ride alone and without external assistance) will be scrupulously respected, we will strengthen this rule with immediate effect. From now on, no radio conversation from the pits to the driver will be able to include information related to the performance of the car or the driver. We should remind you that the transmission of data from the pits to the car is specifically prohibited by Article 8.5.2 of the F1 technical regulations. »
