Marc Marquez was faithful to him on the Jerez circuit. The eight-time world champion never gave up and believed, for a moment, to return to the highest step of the podium (last victory at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, in 2021). In the battle with the intractable Francesco Bagnaia, the Gresini driver finally lost to the reigning world champion.

At the start, Marc Marquez made a good start, which allowed him to keep the benefit of his pole position. The fight was fierce from the first rounds; the leader is then overtaken by Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin. The Spaniard, who has taken the lead in the meantime, will fall and leave his two competitors to fight for victory.

The duel at the top

Five laps from the checkered flag, Marc Marquez caught up with Francesco Bagnaia in turn 9, but the Italian managed to keep the lead, even if the two touched each other. A magnificent exchange of arms between the two drivers which ultimately did not last until the last laps; Pecco said stop, increased his pace and Marquez couldn't keep up.

“It was an important race, underlines Marquez. At the beginning I was holding back, because I have fallen a lot lately but the speed was really there and I knew I could fight with Pecco (Bagnaia). It was a close fight look at my arm (points to the tire mark on his suit while laughing). It’s great, that’s racing! »

Despite this slight disappointment of not having pocketed the victory, Marc Marquez remains particularly happy with his race and salutes the very good performance of his opponent of the day:

“The last lap, he (Bagnaia, Editor’s note) really pushed. I really tried to keep up with him, but he had a little more going than me. I am very happy with this first podium. Now I don't care what happened in the past, I look to the future. »

A race which could allow him to not only launch his season, but also bury his terrible memories of Jerez which almost ended his career in 2020…
