Unsurprisingly, the sporting regulations, as well as the F2 that of the F3, will evolve in view of the 2024 season. And for this new campaign, the FIA and the promoter of two championships have decided to innovate by establishing a very specific rule concerning the red flag.

In the publication of the new sporting regulations, article 33.5 states that “ any driver who, in the opinion of the stewards, is solely responsible for a red flag during qualifying will not be allowed to re-participate in the session and their best time achieved during it may be deleted."

A novelty which is reminiscent of the regulations of theIndyCar where a driver automatically loses his best time if he causes a red flag, regardless of whether he intends to do so or not. This rule undoubtedly intervenes to avoid doubtful episodes on urban circuits like Monaco, often affected by this type of case at all levels. Sergio Pérez, on pole on the Rock in 2021, had provoked one and suspicions against him had been raised without this leading to an investigation by the race direction.

However, in Formula 2 as in Formula 3, the stewards reserve the right to judge the intentionality of the person concerned in the event of neutralization. A detail which could change the situation since the “accused” will always be able to deny any real desire to cause this neutralization. To see how the application will be done and how the different cases will be judged, if there are any. It would also not be surprising if this were used as an experiment before the system arrives in F1, the promotion formulas often serving as a laboratory for the premier category.

Note also that the two points for pole position on Friday will now not be awarded before the official publication of the Main Race on Sunday morning.
