One Russian can hide another. After the two consecutive victories of Robert Shwartzman (Prema) during the last two main races, it is Nikita mazepin (Hitech) which removed the “feature race” from the Grand Prix of F2 at Silverstone, Saturday. The former ART Grand Prix driver was ahead Guanyu-Zhou (UNI-Virtuosi) and Yuki tsunoda (Pug). This is the second success in a row for Hitech, after Luca Ghiotto’s victory in the sprint race in Hungary.
Starting from 5th place, Mazepin took advantage of the start from the pit lane of Callum Ilott (UNI-Virtuosi) and the poor start of poleman Felipe Drugovich (MP Motorsport) to move into second position, just behind Mick Schumacher (Prema). The former ART Grand Prix driver even took the lead from Tour 3, before taking a comfortable mattress.
After an unpredictable race in Hungary, with a lot of degradation, Silverstone was less extreme but brought its share of uncertainties: Mick Schumacher seemed well on his way to grabbing the podium but finished 9th after seeing his pace dip, while Callum Ilott , starting from the pit lane, landed a He finally finished 9th, just behind Dan Ticktum who will start on pole for the sprint race. Zhou and Tsunoda, 8th and 9th in qualifying, therefore grabbed the podium, thanks to a new offbeat strategy which worked with a late dive into the pits on lap 22.
Championship leader Robert Shwartzman (Prema), who started from 18th place, did not finish in the points (14th) and lost ground to Ilott, Lundgaard and Mazepin.
