Japan has taken the first step towards hosting a round of the world championship of Formula E. Formula E CEO Jamie Reigle signed an agreement with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike on Tuesday to host an E-Prix in the Japanese capital in spring 2024.

The tour will be set up around the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition center, located on the Tokyo Bay waterfront in the Ariake district of Koto Ward, away from the city center.

“I am excited and honored to stand alongside Governor Koike and announce the collaborative partnership between the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Formula E, said Jamie Reigle following the signing of the agreement. Together we will work to bring a Formula E race to the city in 2024. Tokyo is an iconic global city, recognized as an innovator in consumer technology, a leader in the automotive industry and a trendsetter world cultures. Formula E is delighted to partner with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to make the city a benchmark for zero-emission initiatives. »

Nissan « very enthusiastic " for an E-Prix in Tokyo

Next season, the Formula E grid will be made up of a Japanese team, Nissan, which acquired the e.dams team this year. If there is no longer any Japanese driver in electric competition since 2017 (Kamui Kobayashi during the Hong Kong E-Prix), the land of the rising sun has never hidden its ambition to host the championship as part of efforts to encourage the adoption of zero-emission vehicles.

The general director of the Nissan team, Tommaso Volpe, welcomed this agreement. “We are very excited about this announcement from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Formula E. As the first Japanese manufacturer participating in the championship, we would be delighted to have an E-Prix in Tokyo in 2024. (…) We would like having the opportunity to race with our own racing team in our home market. »
