He was one of the presenters of the Grand Prix of Bahrain 2024, concluded on the third step of the podium. Three weeks after this performance, Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) should probably get back behind the wheel of his SF-24 during the Australian Grand Prix (March 22-24).

The Spanish driver had struggled through Free Practice 1 of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah before doctors diagnosed him with an attack of appendicitis. Forced to withdraw, the 29-year-old from Madrid had to undergo surgery shortly before the Saudi race. However, he made the effort to return to the paddock to support the debut of his replacement in F1, the Briton Oliver Bearman (11th in practice, 7th in the race).

Two weeks after this medical alert, Carlos Sainz is ready to put the helmet back on. His team announced its participation in the media day in Albert Park this Thursday, March 21, a task that falls to all drivers entered year-round in Formula 1. In addition, the winner of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix was spotted on the streets of Melbourne earlier this week, trying to acclimatize to the time difference.

Carlos Sainz, for his part, wanted to reassure his fans on social networks after his operation, and affirmed that he is trying to do everything to be at the start of the Australian Grand Prix. “Everyone has done an incredible job getting me back in shape and feeling much better, confided the Madrilenian. I am now focusing on my recovery and trying to be ready for the next Grand Prix. It won't be easy, it will be tricky, but I think I can do it. »

Even if we will have to wait until the last hours before Free Practice 1 to have confirmation of his presence at the wheel of the SF-24, Ferrari indicated this Tuesday that Carlos Sainz "is doing well" with a view to a possible return.

Carlos Sainz is the second driver in the last two years to be forced to miss a race due to appendicitis. Alexander albon (Williams) missed the Italian Grand Prix in 2022 for the same reason. He was able to return for the next race in Singapore after a three-week absence, while Sainz only had two weeks to recover from Saudi Arabia.
