Seeing Fernando Alonso commit again for several years with Aston Martin, Sergio Pérez must have breathed a first sigh of relief. Only a first, because if this new contract definitively rejects the Spaniard, the fact remains that other suitors can still be real threats.

This season, due to the signing of Lewis Hamilton in Ferrari, the transfer window started much earlier than expected, forcing teams and drivers to start discussions ahead of the traditional summer period planned for this purpose. Helmut Marko also betrayed some secrets (as usual!) on Thursday by confirming discussions with Carlos Sainz, the most prominent free driver for 2025, specifying that he could not however align himself with Audi's offer.

Sergio Pérez is optimistic

But it did not escape the Mexican that Helmut had also praised his work, welcoming his new, more rational approach, with settings less distant from those of Max Verstappen. In short, we appreciate Red Bull that Pérez finally understood that he would not beat the Dutchman consistently over the entire season. That’s not what we’re asking him anyway!

At the end of his contract at the end of the season, Checo was in a bad position last winter to keep his seat in 2025. But the difficulties of his replacement announced Daniel Ricciardo in team B, combined with his truly honorable start to the season (three podiums in four races) have changed the situation somewhat.

If the Sainz threat is not yet completely repulsed, what Yuki tsunoda could also become a natural candidate if the Japanese continues his momentum, the Mexican nevertheless remains today the favorite for his own succession. In any case, he is rather confident about the idea of staying with Red Bull Racing in 2025.

“Of course I am (optimistic). I think it's obvious that the market this year is much earlier than we would all like...I think we're off to a good start. It’s a very good start for the team and I think the priority right now is to perform well on the track, get results, and the rest will take care of itself.”

Despite everything, it will be necessary to maintain a consistent level of performance in the coming weeks, when everything will be decided with a view to 2025 and probably 2026. The native of Guadalajara has seen others, and it is often when we think of him with his back to the wall that he manages to put on a great series and save his skin! Answer in the coming weeks!

TexMex had started 2023 well before collapsing... 2024 seems better for the moment but nothing says that it will manage to maintain this level for the duration of the season! And Red Bull won't do him any favors, especially this good Doktor Helmoooooout
