Last year, same time, same place, Pierre Gasly sparkled on the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The Norman placed his Alpha Tauri in 5th place on the grid, before going for a consistent 4th place during the Grand Prix. A year later, the story is no longer the same: at the end of a complicated Saturday, the Frenchman did not manage to do better than a 14th time during qualifying.

A sad ranking which illustrates all the difficulties encountered by Pierre Gasly in Mexico, but also since the start of the season. Beaten by his teammate Yuki tsunoda, who will start just in front of him on the 7th row, the Frenchman could not give an explanation for his poor performance. “ It was not a good qualification, we were fighting with [Valtteri] Bottas in Free Practice 1 and there we are nine tenths behind, regretted the AlphaTauri driver at the microphone of Canal + after qualifying on Saturday. Since this morning, we have had a lot of difficulties. Unfortunately, we have not found a solution for qualification. »

“I don’t understand how we find ourselves so far from the middle of the grid” confides Gasly

Stuck in the second half of the table, Pierre Gasly's AT03 does not show many signs of improvement. Still in difficulty with his brakes in particular, the future pilot Alpine does not know why his mount does not reveal himself to the level of his direct opponents. “ I don't understand how we find ourselves so far from the middle of the grid compared to usual. You have to prepare well, it's a race where there is generally only one pit stop, so we will try to do the best possible and I hope we will be able to try something. »

Starting from 14th place, the chances of hoping for a good result in the Mexico Grand Prix are quite low, but Pierre Gasly hopes to find pace in the race with a car more comfortable on long stints. “We'll have to try something tomorrow, it's a tricky track here and our long-term pace looks stronger. There is certainly an opportunity in the race to make our way forward. » For AlphaTauri, it will also be about scoring points to stay in the fight against Haas et Aston Martin.
