Lando Norris unlocks his podium counter in 2024. The Briton signed his first podium of the year thanks to his third place acquired at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. With this fourteenth career podium, the young English driver joins Richie Ginther in the statistics. However, if it still performs as well with McLaren, Lando Norris alone holds two records… but a record is not necessarily “positive”! Indeed, these are two little-desired brands that the Bristol native has made in Oceania.

Norris, the most podiums… without a victory!

In Australia, with this 14th career podium, Lando Norris overtook Nick Heidfeld in the statistics. But which ones? Well the Briton is now the sole record holder for the number of podiums won in Formula 1…without ever having won a Grand Prix! A record that he can lose, obviously, if he wins a race in the future. In history, the longest wait for a victory relative to the number of podiums recorded is 15, a mark co-held by Jean Alesi, Mika Hakkinen, Eddie Irvine and Patrick Depailler.

The other record, which he already had, concerns the number of points scored. Thanks to the 15 points from his third place in Melbourne, Lando Norris has seen his career points total rise to 660 since his arrival in F1 in 2019. With this score, he is therefore the driver who has scored the most points… without having won the slightest victory in Formula 1! He is in front Nico Hulkenberg (533) in this category.

It's not for lack of having come close to a victory during his five years in the discipline. The memory of the 2021 Russian Grand Prix – where he was in the lead before losing everything due to rain in the final laps – must still haunt him… Despite these figures not really desired by the drivers, the Briton can still hope break this record: with a well-born McLaren MCL38 and a podium in the third race of the season, the McLaren driver has never been so close to a first success in F1.

Lando Norris (McLaren), 3rd in the Australian GP : “It was a very good day for us. I am very happy and proud of the team. We finished 3rd and 4th, which are a lot of points for the championship. We lacked enough time to catch up with Charles [Leclerc], his pace was better. He undercut us at the end of the first stint, we could have hoped to get 2nd place. Our pace was good enough today. Ferrari and Carlos [Sainz] did a fantastic job, hats off to them. They were fast all weekend. I felt good, I managed to manage my tires. I didn't expect to be on the podium, so I'm very happy. »
