Qualifications in F1 could well have a new face this year. The F1 Commission has agreed on a possible new format for the session which determines the starting grid for Grands Prix following meetings held in Geneva, Switzerland.
The qualifications could see the arrival of a new elimination system, defined as follows:
- Q1
16 minutes
After 7 minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated
The slowest driver is then eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds, until the checkered flag
7 drivers eliminated, 15 advance to Q2
- Q2
15 minutes
After 6 minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated
The slowest driver is then eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds, until the checkered flag
7 drivers eliminated, 8 advance to Q3
- Q3
14 minutes
After 5 minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated
The slowest driver is then eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds, until the checkered flag
2 drivers remain for the last minute and a half.
The final elimination of each session occurs at the checkered flag and not when time is up. The FIA has specified that this system is being studied for introduction this year. The next World Motor Sport Council should validate these decisions.
