While the Arctic Rally Finland service park was resting a few hours before the second stage of the event on the night of Friday to Saturday February 27, a national figure crossed his last finish line. Hannu Mikkola died at the age of 78.
The Finnish driver obviously left his mark with his coronation in the World Rally Championship in 1983, aboard the Audi Quattro A1 and A2 of Group B at the age of 41, a record which still stands in 2021.
Before being accompanied by the Swede Arne Hertz, Hannu Mikkola won his first laurels in the World Cup with John Davenport at Rally des 1 Lacs 000. More unknown was his association with Jean Todt on his way to success at the 1974 Morocco Rally in the Peugeot 504.
Victorious on 18 occasions at world level, he took a step back from 1985. His final success, at the very brittle Safari Rally 1987, came after a wait of three years.
A sign of his popularity and his influence on rallying, several drivers have already paid tribute to Hannu Mikkola on social networks. “Hannu Mikkola won the WRC the year I was born and even though I never had the honor of meeting him, I am saddened by his passing” (Sébastien Ogier).
Sad day for our sport as one of our legends left us today. Hannu Mikkola won the WRC same year I was born and although I never had the honor to meet him I am saddened by his passing as he will be remembered as one of the greats. My thoughts are with his family and friends. RIP. pic.twitter.com/KOxeC4qyjf
