Ott Tänak (Toyota) scored his 5th scratch in a row by completing the 9,27km from Wadern-Weiskirchen in 5'07''5. Sébastien Ogier (M-Sport) and Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) failed by more than 3 seconds, the Belgian even dropping an extra second against the Frenchman. Esapekka Lappi (Toyota) was the closest with 2 seconds behind, just ahead of Dani Sordo (Hyundai). Elfyn Evans (M-Sport) was ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala (Toyota) by a few tenths. Teemu Suninen (M-Sport) was ahead of Craig Breen (Citroën) by 2 tenths. Andreas Mikkelsen (Hyundai) was once again one of the slowest, more than 5 seconds behind.

Ott Tänak has a dozen seconds lead over Sébastien Ogier on the evening of the first stage. Thierry Neuville is now 15 seconds behind his rival for the title and sees Elfyn Evans come back to around ten seconds. The Welshman is put under pressure by Jari-Matti Latvala who remains a second away, himself having less than 4 seconds ahead of Dani Sordo and Esapekka Lappi grouped in a tenth. Craig Breen remains 8th for a second ahead of Andreas Mikkelsen. Teemu Suninen completes the top 10 ahead of Mads Ostberg.
