After dominating the championship of Formula 3 German, the New Zealander joined the Lotus team (formerly called Gravity-Charouz) in Formula Renault 3.5. The Gravity driver had a difficult start to the season with three retirements in four races before flying into the air following contact with the car of the Colombian Huertas at the end of the straight from Kemmel to Spa-Francorchamps. Stanaway was then quickly transferred to the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital in Paris for further examinations as he fractured his fourth and fifth vertebrae.
« It will take me three to six months to recover from this injury, confirms Richie Stanaway on his Facebook page. Unfortunately, this means I will miss the end of the season. It's disappointing, but I'm happy because despite this injury, I could recover completely. »
