Manager of Guanyu Zhou, advisor to several F1 teams, the former head of the Virgin team which became Manor Marussia is not the most celebrity personality in the paddock, but certainly one of the most esteemed. Ride in an Alfa Romeo on the roads of a career where the best rubbed shoulders with the worst.

Hello Graeme. A Stelvio Quadrifoglio, is it the choice of the heart or the reason?

More like circumstances! (Laughs) I wanted to come with my Ferrari California, but it's in the garage. I could also have taken out my 250 1963 GTE inherited from my father, but it is also being serviced. So, I took the car that the stable Alfa Romeo made available to Guanyu-Zhou for the weekend (carpooling achieved during the last British GP. Editor’s note).

Are you a collector?

Let's say I have a few models in my garage: Ferrari, MG, TVR, Porsche… This taste for cars comes from my father. He started buying cars in the 1970s when they were still affordable. There was the oil crisis, and that allowed him to satisfy his passion. We lived in the north of England, close to the Scottish border and the town of Duns, where Jim Clark was from. My father used to go to Chaterhall Airfield, a former RAF airfield (the “Royal Air Force”, the British air force. Editor's note), which has become a racing circuit, to see him race. This was before he was in F1. He often spoke to me about this, and that's how the passion won over me.

Has working in motorsport always been your goal?

It came in a bit of a special way. Holder of a master's degree in mechanical engineering, I found myself living and working in Switzerland for a company that sponsored a team in IndyCar. It was 1984, and Teo Fabi was the pilot. It was through this that I discovered the world of professional motorsport, and from that moment on, I started going to Grands Prix and other events.
