Cristina Gutiérrez, first woman to win a Dakar stage in 16 years
Long live Spain this Sunday, January 3. By car, Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz (Mini) secured a hard-fought victory for the first stage of the Dakar 2021 in Jeddah and Bisha, while in SSV, Cristina Gutiérrez scored her first scratch on the rally-raid.
This result marks the end of almost 16 years of scarcity for women on the Dakar. The German Jutta Kleinschmidt was the last woman to win a stage, then for Volkswagen, in 2005 in Africa.
“Of course, this is a notable moment in my career, but we must not forget that it is a team sport and that I can achieve such results thanks to my coaching, replied the pilot, new member of the Red Bull Junior Team.
The stage was great. The collaboration with François (Cazalet, his co-pilot from Béarn. Editor’s note) was incredible. From the start, the navigation was impeccable. I feel confident with the team and the car. I have to wait until the last competitor to be sure of my victory but I am very happy!
It was a difficult stage for the SSVs because of many rocky passages. A puncture quickly happened and I think almost everyone suffered one. Navigation wasn't easy either. declares the native of Burgos.
