FX. Demaison: “We have no limits with the Volkswagen ID. R »

What were the main changes made to the ID. R between Pikes Peak and the Nürburgring?

We logically changed the fins and the diffuser, in order to better adjust the car to the atmospheric pressure which is much higher here. You always have to find the right balance between balance and support. The battery pack, however, is the same as in the United States. This is our limiting point today.

Why not have this point evolved beyond the question of the actual design of the car?

We believe this is the best provider that currently exists. This will perhaps change, because it evolves every day. The ID R is a real laboratory, and we may try other batteries. We are working on other batteries.

The ground connections seemed a complicated point to understand. How did you improve this?

We found a much better compromise, that's for sure. Running a car with a lot of aero at the Nürburgring is a challenge that we underestimated a little. But little by little, we are getting there. Aerodynamicists always want the car as low as possible, and we had to adjust the ride height as best as possible. But with such a bumpy circuit, and in "3D", it's much less easy. The simulation helps us, but to adjust the suspension and aero at the same time, nothing replaces driving.

You brought two cars here. For what ?

One is full of sensors, the other is not. And on the latter, we removed as many unnecessary parts as possible.

You have changed tire manufacturer from Michelin to Bridgestone. What is the reason ?

Bridgestone is a privileged technical partner of Volkswagen, it seemed normal to us to work with them.

Are the tires brought here specific to this attempt?

Yes. The construction and compound itself are special.

China will come after this record (in addition to Goodwood). Will you return to the base used at Pikes Peak?

Yes. Compared to Pikes Peak, we have evolved the car in terms of electrical architecture and software. The brakes have changed from ceramic to carbon.

Personally, is this one of your best experiences as an engineer?

It sure is nice, especially without technical regulations. You have little opportunity to be able to “clear up” lots of things in terms of engine, batteries, aero… We have no limits. Not too long ago, I didn't think an electric car could do this kind of thing.
