Karting – Augustin Bernier, French OK-J champion: “I want to switch to cars”

Augustin Bernier, French OK-J champion: “I want to move on to the car”

Congratulations on this lovely title!

This is my first French champion title. The season went well. Except in Saint-Amand (North), the penultimate weekend, where I was not fast. I started 2nd in the Final to finish 6th. I could have secured the title there, but I had to wait. I finally picked it up in Essay (Orne). I won everything this year, I scored 200 points out of a possible 200 (the FFSA counts the worst final of each driver, Editor's note). All while only taking one pole on the clock. The battle was good with Paul Alberto (vice-champion. Editor's note), who was very consistent. Hugo Herrouin also had a lot of performance at the end of the year.

You are the brother of Victor Bernier, who currently drives in German F4. Does this help?

Of course, that's a plus. He was there for the final. He advises me on all levels, mental and technical. It puts a bit of pressure to have a big brother who is a world kart champion (OK-J in 2018. Editor's note), but it's okay, I manage (smile).

What is your program for the end of the season and for next year?

There remains the OK-J world championships (October 28-31, Editor's note), in Campillos in the south of Spain. This will be my last race of the year, and my last in OK-J. Next year, I have the choice between moving into OK (senior kart category. Editor's note) or into F4. For the moment, we would go more on F4… but not in racing. It's still a little early, considering I'm only 14. The goal would be to train to try to win in the first year, in 2023. I want to move on to the car.
