Kouvola, an old-school track back in World RX

This is one of the (rare) joyful consequences of the coronavirus. The World Rallycross Championship returns on August 29 and 30 on a traditional track of the sport, in Kouvola (Finland), for the first time since 2014!

Kouvola, an old-school track back in World RX

The Finnish track barely reaches one kilometer (1,06 km precisely), but contains many traps: blind turns, jumps and significant elevation change (12 meters). When the rain gets involved, the circuit transforms into an ice rink, the proof during a semi-final where five cars take off in the scenery:

Tanner Foust (Volkswagen), who started in pole position, kept his place to become the first guest to win a round of World RX. The American still remains today the only member of this very select club!

“Wow, what a mess, he exclaimed then. The mud was very heavy and slippery, I knew you had to go in the lead because mud builds up on your windshield when you ride in a peloton. My windshield wipers stopped working halfway through; If I came out of the joker lap behind a car, I would have had to stop because it would have been dark in the car. »

Six years later, there are only five who can claim participation in the World Cup in Finland: Timmy Hansen, Andreas Bakkerud, Timur Timerzyanov, Anton Marklund and Liam Doran. Niclas Grönholm has only experienced the RX Lites, while Robin Larsson is probably more knowledgeable, having won the RallyX Nordic race there in 2019.

The qualifying rounds of the World RX in Finland will be followed live on video on AUTOhebdo.fr.
