Castroneves “outside his comfort zone” in RallyX on Ice

Helio Castroneves takes over from his teammate Josef Newgarden by coming to discover RallyX on Ice at the Gol final in Norway. The Team Penske driver took the wheel of a Supercar Lites for the first time while also discovering driving on ice.

“Everyone came to give me advice. If you want to turn left, you must first turn right. Everything works backwards! The car starts moving in all directions as soon as you touch the brakes, explained Helio Castroneves. We discuss while it's -20 or -25°C. It's pretty brutal for me. I have to return after only five laps because my feet and hands are frozen. For a Brazilian who lives in Florida, I'm not really used to snow. In any case, it’s a lot of fun, much more than I thought! »

The three-time Indy 500 winner must above all get his bearings, the RallyX on Ice being very different from the other disciplines he has competed in in his career.

“The learning begins with the track created on a (thick) layer of ice. The tires are also studded and you have to get the best out of them for corner exits. The track changes constantly as you go through it. The challenge never stops but it's fun to do. You have to be on your guard at all times. The good news is that if we crash, we won't damage the car because we are surrounded by walls of snow. “I sent a message (to Josef Newgarden) and he said, 'You're going to suffer with the cold.' He was right. »

Helio Castroneves does not intend to aim for the leading roles this weekend, the objective being above all to have fun while gaining as much experience as possible in the discipline.

“Despite the advice we receive, we can only appreciate the tips once behind the wheel. I'm obviously a little out of my comfort zone. This is the first time I've driven a car Rallycross and more on the snow. I just hope to stay on the trail and not end up in a wall of snow. Those who start in front have a clear view, but it is quite different at the back of the peloton. It's like riding in the rain with the wind in your face. If I manage to stay in contact with others and learn as much as possible, it won't be bad.", added the Brazilian.
