The eRX2, the first electric rallycross championship launched in 2021

Long announced, then postponed to 2022 for the premier category, le rallycross finally goes electric. In 2021, one year before the World RX Championship, one category will only use electric units in competition: the eRX2.

As its name suggests, the eRX2 will serve as an access level to World RX. The vehicle is a four-wheel drive. Under a temporary dress from an RX2 Supercar Lites, there is a battery delivering 250 kW of power (or 335 horsepower), created by the Spanish company QEV Technologies over the last nine months.

The battery is placed to the right of the driver, in a central position to guarantee perfect weight distribution between front and rear (50/50). An eRX2 can be driven for a maximum of 25 minutes, with a recommended recharge time of 20 minutes between each session.

The championship will benefit from the FIA badge and will be organized by IMG, the promoter of World RX. Olsbergs MSE will take care of the sporting part of the eRX2. As for the calendar, it will revolve around six rounds in Europe.

“Through the launch of the eRX2, we will be able to provide a low-cost entry route to young drivers”, assures the President of the off-road commission at the FIA, Gyarfas Olah.

The head of QEV Technologies, Joan Orus, points out the advantage of rallycross, which consumes little energy thanks to its sprint races. “Rallycross is the ideal discipline for electric cars. I'm confident in the eRX2's ability to deliver even more spectacular action than before (with thermal).

Not only will the level of torque available make it much faster than a current RX2, but it will also be sharper to pilot. This is a crucial factor in preparing future drivers for the Supercar class. »
