World RX will start in July, Montalegre returns

World RX does not forget its roots. A few years after giving in to the fashion of artificial circuits (Abu Dhabi, Austin in particular), the World Championship of rallycross takes advantage of travel restrictions linked to Covid-19 to return to emblematic circuits of the discipline.

The return of the Montalegre track (Portugal) is the latest example. The circuit located in the hills of Vila Real will host nothing more and nothing less than the 2021 final, on October 23 and 24. Between 2014 and 2018, Montalegre was already on the world calendar.

Montalegre unfortunately replaces another historic route in the discipline, Hell (Norway). The other announcement of this new calendar is the postponement of the opening round in Barcelona (Spain)… to the end of July! A decision taken in order to guarantee the arrival of the public in Catalonia.

“We all recognize the positive trend of the summer on the pandemic in Europe”, explains Arne Dirks, Executive Director of Rallycross Promoter GmbH in charge of World RX.

“That is why, after maintaining close relationships with our key stakeholders, we have made the deliberate decision to delay the start of the campaign in the hope that we can open the doors to fans at as many events as possible and safely.

It's a mix of iconic rallycross tracks and modern, state-of-the-art venues. We are confident that we now have the best possible World RX schedule for 2021. Being able to confirm the return of Montalegre – a circuit that has always been a fan favorite and never fails to provide a warm welcome to World RX – is a great news for everyone, and while we are obviously disappointed that we won't be able to race in Norway this year due to complications from the pandemic, we are sure that Hell will return to the calendar in the future as the World RX begins a radiant new era. »

The Lohéac round (Ille-et-Vllaine) keeps its usual dates of early September. Höljes (Sweden) is postponed by seven weeks and finds a summer location, while the new meeting at the Nürburgring (Germany) will switch between July and August. Riga (Latvia) and Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) will start the final sprint.
