La Porsche 935 entered the hearts of motor racing fans on the Mulsanne Straight by winning, from 1976 to 1981, the 24 Hours of Le Mans in its Group 5 category. The failure of the factory 936 Group 6 prototypes in 1979 even allowed it to win the classic Le Mans in the general classification in the hands of brothers Bill and Don Whittington and Klaus Ludwig.
