Kyalami and Monza on the menu for the 2020-2021 WEC

In September 2020, the World ChampionshipEndurance will enter a new era, that of Le Mans Hypercar. Il fallait dès lors proposer à Toyota, Aston Martin & Co a calendar worthy of the name, and this is what the WEC.

As expected, Shanghai and São Paulo (already replaced this season by COTA, Austin), disappear, in favor of Kyalami and Monza, two circuits rich in history, and already visited by the Prototypes in the past. The WEC will travel to the African continent for the first time since its revival in 2012.

The last visits of the World SportsCar Championship – ancestor of the WEC – on the South African and Italian tracks date back to 1984 and 1992 respectively. The victories then went to the Lancia LC2-84 of Patrese-Nannini and the Toyota TS010 of Lees- Ogawa. But the Kyalami 1000km was also organized from 1986 to 1988 and the FIA Sports Car Championship went there between 1998 and 2000.

The number of rounds remained the same at eight, but after a trial season the four-hour format was abandoned. It is true that this is short, especially for the crews of three drivers, who make up the majority of the field.

Finally, to offer more preparation time to the protagonists of the Le Mans Hypercar category, the Prologue will be held at Silverstone, the Monday and Tuesday preceding the race, which will be held on Saturday, to avoid entering into conflict with the Italian Grand Prix.
