McLaren could make its own engine

McLaren could consider building its own engine by taking advantage of the future regulations planned by the FIA in 2021. While the Woking team is suffering from the poor performance of the Honda Power Unit and is in discussions with other engine manufacturers for 2018, it would like to strengthen its independence in the long term.

“We are interested to see what the new 2021 engine regulations will offer. We could then consider building our own engine, said Zak Brown, executive director of McLaren, on ESPN. La F1 is expected to evolve very positively from 2021 with budget reductions, a different income distribution and new engine regulations. It’s a bit difficult to make a decision for 2021 because many things will change. »

McLaren still seems far from being able to produce its own engine since the British manufacturer does not even have a department linked to this area. Even its cars sold commercially have mechanics produced by subcontracting.

“We are certainly not in a position to spend hundreds of millions developing a new engine. The new engine regulations will have to be economically viable for us,” however clarified Zak Brown.

McLaren could leave Honda for Renault in 2018, the two manufacturers having confirmed that they were in discussions.
