Jamie Whincup wins his 5th V8 Supercars title

Jamie Whincup (Red Bull Racing Australia) needed only a 22nd place finish to secure a fifth V8 Supercars title after winning the penultimate event of the season. The Triple Eight Racing driver scored a final podium to be crowned for the fifth time in the space of six seasons, not without battling with Jason Bright (Team BOC) for second place, while Shane van Gisbergen (Tekno Team) took victory after starting from pole.

“I had the Championship in the back of my mind and it crossed my mind in the last 20 laps that I had to do”, comments the five-time champion of the discipline who joins Mark Skaife, Dick Johnson and Ian Pete Geoghegan, his series of titles having only been disrupted in 2010 by James Courtney. “This figure is impressive. I'm a huge fan of Skaife and what he's done and it's an honor to join him. I had the opportunity to win three in a row in 2010, I missed that opportunity, and I didn't think I would have that chance again. »

Alexandre Prémat (Fujitsu Racing GRM) finished the last race of the season in 16th place. The Frenchman finished the season in 19th place. Video summaries of the two weekend races can be found on this link.
