It was an eventful weekend for the debut of Gen3 in Supercars. In Newcastle (New South Wales), Shane van Gibsergen first offered himself a 76e career victory, the first for a Chevrolet driver since Kevin Bartlett at Oran Park in 1982. The Camaro ZL1 from the Detroit (Michigan) manufacturer made a perfect debut in replacing the local Holden brand. The Triple Eight team even signed a double with Broc Feeney. A short-lived joy. A few hours after this performance, the two cars were liveried Red Bull were deprived of this result. After complaints from Tickford and Walkinshaw Andretti United, the Deputy Race Directors noted a technical infraction regarding the drivers' cooling system. Shane van Gisbergen and Broc Freeney were disqualified and victory went to Cam Waters (Monster Energy Racing) ahead of Chaz Mostert (Mobil 1 Optus Racing) for a one-two finish for the Ford Mustang GTs.

Waters and Mostert found themselves in the first two places during the Sunday race. In the role of the chaser behind his compatriot, Waters made a mistake halfway through the race and damaged his car in the wall of turn 9. Long in the lead, the driver of the No. 25 Ford Mustang gradually saw the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 No. 97 by van Gisbergen grow bigger in his mirrors. On the 85th of 95 laps, the outgoing champion threw himself on the inside of turn 9 to dispossess Mostert of first place and race towards his true 76th victory.

Mostert emerges as leader of the first lively weekend of the season with 45 points ahead of Brodie Kostecki and 57 over Waters. Van Gisbergen lost big with his disqualification since he is in 11th placee place with a disbursement of 126 units. Next meeting, Albert Park in Melbourne from March 31 to April 3, on the sidelines of the Australian GP F1.
