Fourth on the grid, Shane van Gisbergen (Triple Eight) made a very good start to the race which immediately positioned him among the contenders for victory this Saturday in Sydney. Quickly moving up to 2nd after getting rid of the Dick Johnson Racing drivers, Anton De Pasquale and Wil Davison, the New Zealander would unfortunately lose big in the space of just a few laps.
The intervention of the Safety Car after Macauley Jones (Brad Jones Racing) stopped on track forced all the drivers to dive into the pit lane at the end of the 6th lap. Forced to wait behind his teammate Jamie Whincup, the Triple Eight representative returned to the track in 9th position before losing 3 places to the detriment of the drivers running on super soft tires. Then began the recovery operation for the championship leader.

With great pace, Shane van Gisbergen overtook Chaz Mostert (Walkinshaw Andretti United) and Zane Goddard (Matt Stone Racing) in quick succession to move up to 10th at the start of the 18th lap. Then returned to 9th after gaining the upper hand over Anton De Pasquale during the 22nd loop. The Kiwi then gleaned two positions thanks to the stop of Bryce Fullwood (Walkinshaw Andretti United) and another overtake this time by Brodie Kostecki (Erebus Motorsport).
A new round of pit stops allowed the Kiwi to move up to 4th and position himself behind Jamie Whincup, Will Brown (Erebus Motorsport) and leader Cameron Waters (Tickford Racing). Falling back to 8th after his second pit stop and the start of the rain on lap 42, Shane van Gisbergen then began his attack.

Rid of Anton De Pasquale and Jamie Whincup, who kindly let him pass, SVG then found himself 4th on the 59th lap after having erased Brodie Kostecki. Very fast with his new super soft train and despite the raindrops, Shane van Gisbergen took the scalp of Chaz Mostert on the 60th lap before overtaking Will Brown and leader Cameron Waters in quick succession just two laps from the end .

Untouchable at the end of the race, Shane van Gisbergen claims a 14th victory this season and is closer than ever to a second Supercars crown. Jamie Whincup and Cameron Waters completed the podium as Triple Eight took the Teams title.
