BMW will launch its M4 GT3 in 2022

After the Z4 and the M6, it will be the turn of the M4 to take up the torch of the GT3 in the BMW family. Munich confirmed this weekend the arrival of a new car based on the M4, already seen in the GT4 category for several seasons. Enough to unify the competition-customer range in the same way as Mercedes or Audi.

On the menu, an unchanging six-cylinder engine block, codenamed S58, powered by the famous in-house Twin Turbo technology and exceeding 500 hp, before the application of the traditional Balance of Performance.

2020 will constitute a full year of development before the first racing outings are carried out in 2021, before full availability in 2022. This will be necessary to join in the history of the GT3 the big sisters Z4 and M6, which have notably both triumphed at the 24 Hours of Spa, the M6 having also won the FIA GT World Cup in 2018.

“With our new GT3 project, we underline the importance of the BMW M Customer Racing department,” comments Jens Marquardt, Director of BMW Motorsport. It is a central pillar of our motorsport program.

With the introduction of the new GT3 regulations for 2022, the BMW M4 is the perfect base. The basic product from our colleagues at BMW M is once again simply great. Without wanting to reveal too much, the BMW M4 GT3 will be a real asset in terms of technology.

We want to play a major role in international GT racing with the BMW M4 GT3. Development is already underway at full speed. The first tours are planned for the second half of 2020.”

On the sidelines of 24 Hours of Le Mans this year, Jens Marquardt confirmed that a new platform would be used for the GT3, BMW continuing its effort in the category after abandoning the GTE Pro in WEC after a single campaign with the M8.
