DTM-C2: Edoardo Mortara takes third place

Lucas Auer seemed in a strong position today to return to the top step of the podium. Best time yesterday in qualifying, the Austrian was unable to take advantage of his position after a five-place grid penalty and ultimately finished seventh.

This Sunday, Auer was once again the fastest in qualifying and dominated the start of the race ahead of Marco Wittmann (BMW), Bruno Spengler (BMW) and Edoardo Mortara, ambushing the only Audi RS 5 in the first part of the race.

After the pit stops, Auer retained control of the race, but now found himself under threat from Edoardo Mortara, who stayed on track longer during his first stint and returned to the track in second position ahead of Marco Wittmann.

With noticeably fresher tires, the Italian finally found an opening on the leader and flew to victory, while the fight for third place would focus attention in the last quarter of the race.

At the wheel of an Audi having notably benefited from a weight reduction before this second race, Mattias Ekström will lead the charge and forcefully get rid of Bruno Spengler for fourth place, but will fail in his attempts on Wittmann.

The top 10 is completed by Nico Müller (Audi), Bruno Spengler, Gary Paffett (Mercedes), victim of contact with Jamie Green (Audi) during the event, Tom Blomqvist (BMW), Daniel Juncadella (Mercedes) and Miguel Molina (Audi). Adrien Tambay (Audi) concludes his weekend in 16th place.

In the championship, Marco Wittmann remains well in the lead and now sees Edoardo Mortara return to second position, 33 points behind the BMW driver, winner of the first race yesterday in the Eifel.
