DTM – Coulthard will hang up after Hockenheim

David Coulthard to end his racing career at the end of the season DTM contested this weekend at Hockenheim. After taking his first steps in motorsport in 1986 with the karting, the Scot ends a 25-year career where he played 15 seasons in F1 via Williams (1994 and 1995), McLaren (from 1996 to 2004) and Red Bull (until 2008), notably winning the honorary title of vice-world champion in 2001 behind Michael Schumacher. The British driver then turned to the DTM in 2010, joining Mercedes, but the results have never been convincing. At 41, the BBC consultant for F1 now wishes to end his career by maintaining the status of ambassador of the Stuttgart brand.

“I’m looking forward to the last race of the DTM season which will have been exciting”, comments the Mercedes driver from the Mücke Motorsport team. “This weekend will be the last opportunity to fight at this level as I will stop riding in this discipline to focus on developing my business off the track as well as my family. I will continue to be part of the Mercedes family through my role as an AMG ambassador. First of all, I would like to thank Norbert Haug and his team for giving me this chance. I have enjoyed the last three years and I wish the organizers and drivers of the DTM to continue to rise and succeed with this Championship. »

Norbert Haug remembers with emotion the Scot's many seasons at McLaren, who played hand in hand with Mercedes. “David is our first F1 winner of the modern era and this victory, on March 9, 1997 in Melbourne, secured his place in our motorsport history”, comments the sports director of the star manufacturer. “David drove brilliantly with us and our partner McLaren for nine F1 seasons and remains one of the most popular drivers in the world. David's involvement in DTM was as beneficial to him as it was to the discipline. He has been a successful member of the Mercedes family for over a decade and will continue to remain so after his retirement. Thanks David. »
