DTM – Wittmann: “Mortara also deserved the title”

Marco Wittmann won his second title in DTM after the Hockenheim final contested last weekend by taking 2nd and 4th place in the two races of the weekend. The BMW driver had to fight until the last event against his rival for the title Edoardo Mortara who only fell four points behind the champion after his victory in the last event of the season.

“I managed to keep my composure as I have done all season, explained Marco Wittmann. My opponents haven't made my life easy this year, that's for sure. Edoardo Mortara was a great rival and he also deserved the title. Maybe I managed to be a little more skillful. I avoided taking risks and scored points almost in every race (15 times in 18 races). I also won three victories. It was close, but we didn't steal the title. »

“I have the greatest respect for (Edoardo Mortara) and for his performance, added Marco Wittmann. He is a fantastic driver and a very pleasant person. Edo fought like a lion and did everything to succeed, but I just finished in front. I will have to be careful next year because Edo will do everything to take his revenge. »

Disappointment was obviously in order for the Italian who dreamed of winning a first DTM title, even if Audi Sport secured the Teams and Manufacturers titles.

“My emotions are mixed, admitted the resident of Team Abt Sportsline. “We achieved a great result by winning the race on Sunday and securing the Teams and Constructors' titles, but on the other hand, I missed out on the title by very little despite five wins in a single season. It's hard to swallow and it's going to take me a few days before I smile again. »
