The DTM abandons the ballasts

Le DTM will no longer carry performance-related weight penalties. This rule voted unanimously between the promoter ITR and the three manufacturers involved (Audi, BMW and Mercedes) should be effective from the next meeting at Red Bull Ring (September 23 and 24), penultimate round of the season.

“All participants heard the public, comments Gerhard Berger, president of ITR. I am delighted that all the manufacturers have come to an agreement in the interest of the discipline. This is a strong signal sent by the DTM. We will soon submit this proposal to the DMSB (German Motorsport Federation). I am confident of her approval after she seconded this proposal. »

The abandonment of ballast will also be effective for the next DTM seasons. The three manufacturers have also agreed to optimize the technical regulations relating to aerodynamics in 2018.

“I am happy that this debate around ballast is behind us and that sporting competition is returning to its place, rejoices Dieter Gass, Audi sporting director. We still have four races to go and each manufacturer has at least one driver in the top four of the Championship. Everything is open and it will remain exciting until the end. »

“It’s a great day for the DTM, its public and motorsport, adds Jens Marquardt, BMW sporting director. There are only winners today. We have been looking for a solution in recent weeks and we have reached an agreement. This platform is even more attractive and opens up to the arrival of other manufacturers. »

The future of the DTM remains uncertain following the announcement of Mercedes withdrawal at end of 2018 season.

“We are very happy to have finally reached an agreement to abandon the ballasts. The DTM responded to the wishes of the public and the drivers. I'm expecting a great fight for the title.", nevertheless confirms Ulrich Fritz, director of Mercedes-AMG DTM.

Mattias Ekström (Audi) remains at the head of the Championship before the Spielberg event with nine points ahead of Lucas Auer (Mercedes). The manufacturer with the Rings also leads the Manufacturers ranking with 52 units ahead of the star brand.
