The DTM with a new DRS and push-to-pass

The DTM will be the most powerful cars in the discipline ever produced in 32 years. The organizers have unveiled the technical regulations for the 2019 season where the cars will adopt a 2l 4-cylinder bi-turbo which will replace the old V8s in order to get closer to the Super GT while having a bodywork reducing drag even further.

The German Touring Car Championship has gone even further by optimizing the DRS with a larger rear wing that now only relies on one element compared to two previously. This wing is otherwise identical to that used in Super GT. The driver will now be able to activate it as soon as he is less than 3 seconds from the car in front of him, compared to one second previously. In addition, all competitors will be able to activate their DRS in the last 5 laps, regardless of the gap in the peloton.

The organizers also exploited other tracks to improve the spectacle and push the drivers to adopt aggressive driving. The cars will now be equipped with a “push-to-pass” offering an additional 30hp via greater carburetion. Each driver will be able to activate it 12 times per race.

The new DTMs will also be lighter. Empty (without fuel or driver), the total weight will be established at 981kg. That's still 50kg less than last year. The weight/performance ratio is now established at 1,6kg/hp. Simulations indicate that they will be able to exceed 300km/h.

“These new features are the perfect ingredients to achieve spectacular overtaking and make racing exciting. Thanks to the weight reduction and the new aero package, the skills and courage of the drivers will be put back in the spotlight”, comments Achim Kostron, the management director of ITR, promoter of the DTM.
