The DTM returns to the Nordschleife in 2021

Every week, we learn a little more about the “ DTM 4.0” as Gerhard Berger calls it. On Friday, the boss of the series officially presented the final details of the 2021 DTM, marked by the arrival of the GT3s, during the 2020 finals at Hockenheim. He notably confirmed a model based on customer competition with one driver per car and 55 Minute races. The cars will obviously have a performance scale to which will be added a weight handicap for the first three in each race (25, 18 and 15 kilos).

The 2021 calendar has also been revealed. It will feature 50% rounds in Germany only. The rest will travel throughout Europe or almost. The season will begin in Russia in St-Petersburg before heading to Monza. Two German meetings will follow at the Norisring and the Lausitzring. The DTM will then head to Belgium.

The 7th round will delight Nürburgring fans. For the first time in over a decade, the DTM will head to the Nordschleife, thanks to the move to GT3. The race should be the highlight of the season.

The series will then leave for Austria in Red Bull Ring will then end its journey outside Germany in Assen in the Netherlands. The final will take place as usual at Hockenheim.

The DTM promoters took advantage of the presence of the manufacturers to take the pulse of the commitments for 2021. Thomas Yaeger, director of Mercedes, indicated that several teams have already confirmed their participation in 2021.

On the side of Audi and Chris Reinke, director of customer competition at Audi, we are much more cautious. “We will do everything to allow the teams who wish to be present. But the difficulty is to raise the necessary budgets to participate in an entire season. And in the end it is the teams who largely decide and manage their involvement. So we will support them but we can't do more. »

No official name has yet been announced.
