Electric cars will soon be driving DTM. This weekend takes place the last round of this 2021 DTM season, at Norisring. The ITR, the organizer of the German championship, took advantage of the event to unveil a new model, the DTM Electric Design Model, in collaboration with MAHLE and Schaeffler. Still under development, this prototype gives a first idea of the visual of the electric cars which will take the start for the 2023 season. This automobile which exceeds 1000 horsepower will be capable of traveling in excess of 300 km/h. DTM boss Gerhard Berger is happy with the direction his championship is taking towards a new electric era. “The development of DTM Electric is in full swing and we are proud to be able to present the next step with the DTM Electric design model. The appearance of the car expresses our vision of a fully electrified high-performance racing series: futuristic, aerodynamically efficient, innovative and sporty to the core.” During the 2023 season, the DTM Electrics will complement the current cars, not replace them.
In November 2020, when the introduction of electric cars was announced, a first track session was carried out. The pilot of Formula E, Daniel Abt, as well as former DTM champions Joachim Stuck and Timo Scheider, drove the new model on the Hockenheim track.
