The DTM ready to open up to private teams

The future of DTM remains uncertain with the scheduled departure of Mercedes at the end of the year. The German Touring Car Championship will thus find itself with only two manufacturers, Audi and BMW, and will no longer have any room to maneuver to sustain its future in the event of the withdrawal of another brand.

Gerhard Berger, the president of the promoter ITR which owns the DTM, raised the possibility of opening the discipline to private teams. The HWA structure currently engaged with Mercedes could thus continue to run its C 63 AMG.

“A system relying solely on manufacturers like we currently have is not good and the brands involved are fully aware of this, explained the former pilot Ferrari at the DPA agency. If HWA needs other projects, the option of being able to continue running DTM cars would be a great solution. No other team has more experience and expertise than them in the discipline. »

The DTM is also preparing its engine change where it will abandon its 8l V4 for 4l 2-cylinders in order to be in accordance with the Class One regulations allowing a rapprochement between the German Championship and Super GT.

“The cars are up to date, only the engines will change. It will be necessary to find financial partners, but it should be feasible”, said the Austrian.
