A fiery René Rast wins in Zolder

From a burning car to a racing fireworks display. René Rast illuminated the DTM this week-end. Thanks to a second victory in two races at Zolder, the reigning champion moved back to second place in the championship. He also benefits from a rout of his opponents.

Sunday's race was spectacular, even before its start. On the grid, flames were coming out of René Rast's car. It was difficult to see how the German could start the race, but the mechanics managed to resolve the problem in time. At least Rast was hot. When the lights went out, he made a dazzling start to pass between the two BMWs and take the lead, followed like his shadow by Ferdinand Habsburg in the Audi WRT. The Austrian hit the BMW of pole-sitter Timo Glock, who ended his race in the gravel.

The race calmed down until the tenth lap. Surprised by his cold tires after his stop, Robin Frijns, second in the championship, slid against the barriers on the pit exit lane and damaged his suspension. Race over, stupidly.

Meanwhile, René Rast could fly to victory. Behind Nico Müller, solid championship leader, had to fight for ninth place and was only able to bring home two points. The Swiss is now only ten points ahead of Rast. Robin Frijns' zero points drop him back to third place. Everything is restarted.

In the race, Mike Rockenfeller took second place and Lucas Auer completed the podium for BMW. French Loic duval, little in sight this weekend, finished 13th.

The complete ranking.
